Devarim/Deuteronomy 12:29-13:19
Chapter 12
29) When the Lord your God removes the nations before you, as you go to take possession of their land, and you drive them out and settle in their land.
30) Be careful not to be trapped into following them once they have been removed from your way. Don’t ask about their gods, saying, ‘How did these nations worship their gods? I will do the same.
31) You must not do that to the Lord your God, because they have done every detestable thing to their gods, things that He hates. They even burn their sons and daughters in the fire as offerings to their gods.
Chapter 13
1) You must follow all the commands I give you; do not add anything to them or take anything away from them.
2) If a prophet or a dreamer of dreams arises among you and gives you a sign or a wonder,
3) And the sign or wonder he predicted happens, and he says to you, ‘Let us follow other gods, which you have not known, and serve them,
4) You must not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer, because the Lord your God is testing you to see if you truly love Him with all your heart and soul.
5) You must walk in the way of the Lord your God, fear Him, keep His commandments, listen to His voice, serve Him, and remain faithful to Him.
6) That prophet or dreamer must be put to death because he has led you astray by speaking against the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt and freed you from slavery. He tried to turn you away from the path the Lord commanded you to follow. In this way, you must remove the evil from among you.
7) If your brother, the son of your mother, or your son, daughter, wife, or a close friend, who is like your own soul, secretly entices you, saying, ‘Let us go and serve other gods,’ which neither you nor your ancestors have known,
8) the gods of the people around you, whether near or far, from one end of the earth to the other.
9) You must not agree with him or listen to him. You must not feel sorry for him, show him mercy, or hide him.
10) But you must certainly put him to death. Your hand must be the first to strike him, and then all the people shall follow.
11) You must stone him to death because he tried to turn you away from the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of slavery.
12) All of Israel will hear about it, be afraid, and will no longer commit such wickedness among you.
13) If you hear it said about one of the cities the Lord your God is giving you to live in,
14) Some wicked people have come out from among you and have led the people of their city astray, saying, “Let us go and serve other gods, which you have not known.”
15) Then you must investigate, search carefully, and ask thoroughly. And if it is true, and it has been confirmed that such an abomination has been committed among you,
16) You must completely destroy the inhabitants of that city with the sword, wiping it out along with everything in it, including the livestock.
17) You must gather all the plunder into the center of the city’s open area and burn it all, including the city and its spoil, as an offering to the Lord your God. It will be a heap of ruins forever; it will never be rebuilt.
18) Nothing that has been devoted to destruction should be kept by you, so that the Lord may turn away from His fierce anger, show you mercy, have compassion on you, and increase your numbers, as He promised your ancestors.
19) When you listen to the voice of the Lord your God, obey all His commandments that I give you today, and do what is right in the sight of the Lord your God.
